Our exhibition CONCEPT
We chose this theme as we find light intriguing to work with; light can be expressed in many different ways, and we thought it would be interesting to experiment with how light can be portrayed.
Even though light can signify hope, it can also be used to show emotions, such as happiness, ranging to the portrayal of dangerous things such as the light emitted from a fire or an explosion. A simple Light could mean anything under the word, such as lightweight, light feelings, or literally light rays. This would give us more freedom to explore the concept, and our works would therefore have a larger sense of creativity.
We draped the board with cloth as we all decided that leaving the board black as it was would be a little plain. To suit the theme Light, we used white cloth with translucent purple so that the board would not give off a dull or heavy colour and would suit the theme better.
As we came up with works suited for the theme, we truly had to stretch our minds as to what light could mean.
In conclusion, preparing for this exhibition opened windows in our understanding of the portrayal of light.

The Parrot
Teo Bei Lin
Glass Paint on Acrylic
2010
This is a painting of a parrot. The parrot is on the right side of the painting. There is only 1 subject matter in the painting, the parrot and the branch it is perched on. The background is divided in a star shape to attract attention to the parrot. Each of these spaces are coloured differently, some with primary colours, some with a mixture with 2 or more colours, and some with 1 or more colours mixed in with transparent paint.
The artist wants to show the colourful parrot as something that is very happy and joyous. Therefore, she employed a largely warm palette with just the border, parts of the background and part of the wing of the parrot to be a cool colour.
The artist is successful in creating this joyous feeling around the parrot as warm colours such as yellow, orange and red gives the impression of happiness. The diagonal lines employed in the composition also successfully made the painting more interesting without distracting the viewers from the main subject matter, the parrot.
