Our exhibition CONCEPT
We chose this theme as we find light intriguing to work with; light can be expressed in many different ways, and we thought it would be interesting to experiment with how light can be portrayed.
Even though light can signify hope, it can also be used to show emotions, such as happiness, ranging to the portrayal of dangerous things such as the light emitted from a fire or an explosion. A simple Light could mean anything under the word, such as lightweight, light feelings, or literally light rays. This would give us more freedom to explore the concept, and our works would therefore have a larger sense of creativity.
We draped the board with cloth as we all decided that leaving the board black as it was would be a little plain. To suit the theme Light, we used white cloth with translucent purple so that the board would not give off a dull or heavy colour and would suit the theme better.
As we came up with works suited for the theme, we truly had to stretch our minds as to what light could mean.
In conclusion, preparing for this exhibition opened windows in our understanding of the portrayal of light.

Shooting Star
Lim Xin Ying
Poster Colour Painting
2010
The artwork shows the night sky filled with many stars and a shooting star in the middle.
The shooting star is painted with white paint and with occasional streaks of silver paint at the head and the tail is painted with silver paint. The paint is applied with impasto style for the head of the shooting star. As it gets further away from the head, the layer of paint gradually gets thinner and when it is nearing the end, the paint applied is so thin that it gives the illusion of it fading away or turning translucent. At the head of the shooting star, the paint is applied in a rough manner with visible brushstrokes and tends to smoothen out when it is reaching the tail. The stars surrounding are just little dabs of paint with a few shaped like a star.
The shooting star represents the desire to shine forever as the night sky looks endless with no boundary. The head is painted with a thick layer of paint as it represents an individual standing strong, shining like a star, able to overcome whatever obstacles to shine in the end. The tail is painted with a thin layer as it means that it whatever obstacles are just mere concerns of the individual and are not important as what he wants is only the essence of success and whatever that is in the way, he will find a way to overcome them.
