Medium: soft pastel, charcoal, dark blue construction paper, art fixtative.
This works is a simple work of a scene of moonlit sea, the only three things in this work are the moon, the sky and the sea, the light is exaggerated, as there are sprinkles of white(the light) as well, which are obviously idealized as there is no way the light at sea will be in sprinkles unless is the water is splashing, which is impossible as the water appears to be calm, another thing is that there are too long highlights of light. This is also not realistic as there is only one highest surface of the sea, unless there are waves, which are obviously not there. Thus the perspective is distorted in such a way that it catches much more light.
The composition of this artwork is balanced, for both the moon and the highlight of the sea are right in the middle of the work, also the sea and the sky almost occupying the same amount of space, the sky with the moon being in the background while the sea being in the foreground. It is also symmetrical, with both left and right sides the same.
A linear perspective is used in the painting. The work is 3-dimensional, even with the distorted composition.
As for the texture, the sea and the sky are well blended and carefully modeled so that there is no visible strokes while the moon and the light are made up of visible strokes, this is because the light would not be as bright is it were to be blended, it is also to show the texture of the moon.
There is no outline to contour the things in drawn at all for this work and the ends of the lines for highlight are also blended so that it merges into the background and will not appear to be too sharp.
The colours used are all cool colours that give a soothing and calm feeling and there is high contrast for black is used for the edges of the work while white is used for the highlights. This contrast has an effect of emphasizing on the light and also giving the work a calm feeling instead of a dull feeling.
Overall, the painting of a scenery gives off a three dimensional feel due to the soft black colour framing the picture, it’s cool colours and the emphasized light gives a calm feeling. This is to show that light can be beautiful and calm.
