Starlight By Yiyuan

Medium: Tablet, Paint Tool SAI, Photoshop

This artwork is a painting of a girl looking wistfully at a distant place under the strong and dazzling light of the sun and the moon, she appears to be at a place like a dessert with a leafless tree. In fact, the whole painting is impossible to exist in the real world, this works has been idealized as everything about it is unrealistic, from the background to the sparkles of light which resemble stars, but unlike real stars that seem small and far away, these stars look very close, have a much larger number than real ones, and they even are lined up into a cure with a loop. And even the tree seems two dimensional with all sorts of colours in it.
Other than the large amount of white, exaggerated light, the whole painting is mostly purplish-pink.

The composition of this work is balanced, as the girl occupies the left side while the tree occupies the right side, the moon occupies in the middle and stars occupy the whole background. Thus the composition is balanced.

A linear perspective is used in the painting. The work looks 3-dimentional.

For this sketch, the brushstrokes are not visible at all, everything is well blended, except for the stroked that need to be visible, such as the strokes of light of the stars.

There are outlines to contour the person, but no outlines for other subjects (moon, tree, etc.) The outlines also help to focus on the person, as the other things like moon and tree are part of the background.

The colour of the painting is mostly made of white, with a large patch of purplish-pink and small dabs of other colours like blue and orange as well, which are faint highlights of the tree and the girl’s hair. The contrast is high as there are some patches of blackish shadings as well. Again, the contrast is to emphasize on the strong light. Being purple, it is made from a mix of warm(red) and cool colour(blue)at the same time, and in addition to the blue(cool colour) and orange(warm colour), it is making the painting seem calm and warm at the same time.

This work is trying to show the beauty of light, it can be dazzling but not hurting to the eyes, unlike glaring light, the soft purplish-pink colour also reducing the glaring effect. The expression on the girl’s face is wistful as she stares into the distance, dazzled by the light around and also feeling happy, but calm. The background is obviously unreal, like an imaginary space, and definitely not the reality. Thus the background and the light are as if they are depicting how the girl is feeling. Therefore light can depict someone’s happiness. It can also be mysterious and amazing as the girl seems to be in awe at the same time. The strange unnatural background and light are for the purpose of making it mysterious.
