Wired: Apple
Teo Bei Lin
Wire with Solder and Super Glue
2010
This is a sculpture of an apple. ITs main shape is built out of wire of varying thickness, the thicker ones as the "skeletal structure" and the thinner ones are wound around them to create a more compact feeling. There is a piece of leaf on top of the main shape created the same way.
With the apple representing the food we eat, the use of wire suggests that the food we eat is largely artificial and man-made, just like wire. The sculpture is modelled closely after a real apple to show that the food we eat, which contains a lot of artificial flavourings and colourings, looks delicious but is in fact, grown with artificial methods.
Therefore, we should pay close attention to the kind of food we consume and be more aware of the threats of artificial flavourings, colourings and the use of chemical during farming to our health.
